Smart Enterprise Magazine – Transporting IT

By: Melinda Zetlin

When something goes wrong in an enterprise, the pressure is on management to make it right again. It is no surprise, then, that some IT leaders dream of the ability to make all their problems disappear with a single phone call. The idea is not so far-fetched. End-to-end outsourcing, which ‘forklifts’ a company’s entire IT operation, moving everything – applications, management and infrastructure – to an outside service provider can enable this to happen. And it’s happening more frequently, says one outsourcing provider.

“This is very much a growing area for us,” says Michael Wilczak, Senior VP of Strategy at Wipro, a global IT consulting, systems integration and outsourcing firm. “Companies have recognized that limiting the service provider’s span of control makes it difficult to achieve their desired business and technology outcomes.”

Several trends are driving end-to-end outsourcing. The growing availability of cloud computing makes it easier to access applications housed off-site. Improved integration among disparate products has also helped. “The growing interdependency between business processes, applications and infrastructure make it increasingly difficult for companies to achieve transformational solutions by parsing out individual components across multiple providers,” Wilczak says, “As a result, clients are turning to service providers that can address the end-to-end technology requirements of the organization.”
